Open Die forging.

The open die forging process does not completely envelope the metal being forged between two hammers thus allowing metal movement between the tools, unlike closed die forging which fully encapsulates the metal between dies. Open die forging at Thos C Wild is carried out using a combination of hammers and a press by heating the metal above the recrystallisation temperature and applying sufficient force to deform the metal to the desired width.
